Star Odyssey (Italian Star Wars) 1979
- Usage
- Public Domain Mark 1.0
Third in a series of Italian science fiction films clearly inspired by Star Wars.
This entry features a couple of comical robots. Three other films in the series are #1 War of the Planets (aka Cosmos 1977), #2 War of the Robots (1978) and #4 Beast in Space (1980). The series is most famous for its gold skinned blond androids and the use of reflective "light sabers".

If you are looking for a film that needed some help from MST3000, then this is definitely one. I am not sure if this is a true Star Wars clone or clone of an extremely bad episode of Star Trek. (and I do mean extremely bad).
For starters, the English dubbing is way off and the story plot is extremely weak. The special effects are horrible. The use of public Domain footage resembles some of the worst Community Videos found on this site. And the fight scenes (well), the fight scenes in my original film (The Great Dope Hunt) had more action (and that is not saying much).
The robots here makes you wonder if Twiki (from Buck Rogers) mated with a Teletubby. Yes they are that bad. Even funnier is that they are romantically linked, and run on throw away battery power. I know all robots require power, but must do not require 9 Volt batteries except in the controllers and then only if they are remote controlled. There is even one robot in this show that takes the comparison of R2D2 to a garbage can very seriously. It looks like someone took a steel barrel and added a Salad Calendar to it for a head.
Now for the weapons. They resemble something you could find in any toy store as a Star Wars -- Master of the Universe Knockoff or something you might find today at a Dollar General or Family Dollar store. The Swords are bulky and have that all too familiar glow in the dark paint. The guns remind you of the type that shot sparks and made a motor running sound when fired.
If there was an award for horrible film, this one must have won in all categories for that year.
But because the film is so bad it is funny I will give it 3 stars just for the laughs. This is one film not to take too seriously.
Notes:
Notice a bad section of the film where it appears to freeze. Happens during first 30 minutes of film before Prison breakout. Might want to fix this if you decide to place it on DVD like I usually do.
Also you can download "The Great Dope Hunt" on this site.

This is certainly not without redeeming qualities.
Though it's hard to tell from the English dubbing
I suspect that this, the third in the series, is intended to be more lighthearted and humorous.
I can tell they are yucking it up a bit and that this seems to be intended for a family market.'has childish action elements and adult sexual elements too. Watch for the scene when the guy is handling his light-saber and puts it on the table without turning it off. Huh!!

Ed wood died and went to Italy, where Saint Whatshisname gave him an actual budget to play with. This probably isn't true, but after watching this space turkey you'll swear it is. The print is in good shape.
This would make a good double feature with "Star Pilot," an even funnier spaghetti space opera, which for it's VHS reissue was billed as "The European Star Wars." Would be worth checking to see if it's PD. In any event it's available from Netflix.
